A Bit of History
Dating back to the 9th century, Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu is steeped in Balinese spiritual tradition. Legend says Rishi Markandeya and his followers rested here, establishing shrines to honor Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Sacred springs, like Tirta Dawa Gunung Kawi, are believed to have emerged from these rituals.
By the 14th–15th century, the temple was fully developed and became closely linked to Tirta Empul and Mengening Temple, especially for the Melukat purification ceremonies.
Melukat: The Sacred Purification
The Melukat ritual is a highlight for visitors. Bathing in the temple’s holy spring waters is believed to cleanse both body and soul, removing negative energy and bringing spiritual balance. This centuries-old practice is a unique glimpse into Balinese culture and spirituality.
